The Old Witch.....

The best known of all witches..... Baba Yaga....

In her "traveling" Hut (and its bird-like legs).... Just one aspect of this old crone...

An old hag with iron teeth who eats children...
She is said to be very thin in appearance ... Baba Yaga of Russian Folklore.....

Even a popular Children's Books "character"....

and the Alexandrite Ring among the tales of this old Witch....

Flying about with her broom (made of Silver Birch), riding in a Mortar

(There are versions that say that the lower body is wooden and looks like a mortar)....

but still said to snatch up and eat children....

She was often used as a "Boogeyman" to frighten kids into behaving....
... she is also known as the "Arch Crone" and is in many Russian Folk-Tales.... As a Nature Spirit she rules over the Elements.... and is said to rule over the Waters of Life And Death... But she has No power over the "pure of Heart"...
... She is very old and wise.... it is said that She Knows All.... She may offer "guidance" to lost souls and to aid Heroes on Quests.... so many have even sought her out to learn from her ...
... She is also known as the "Bone Mother"....

  1. I've loved her ever since I was a child, when I first read about her in THAT EXACT ISSUE of "Jack and Jill" magazine! Thanks for the great trip down memory lane by posting that!

  2. On closer examination of the "Jack and Jill" cover, it must have been an earlier issue in which I first read about her. In 1973 I was 16, long past my "Jack and Jill" days. The issue I read would have been around 1965 or 1966 probably. Clearly they recycled their stories!

  3. I love BABA YAGA. I was really pleased that Studio Ghibli used her in Spirited Away... putting a fun twist on her.
