Well, the individual's relationship with society is a tricky one. In order to interact with others, in pretty much any way, you have to sacrifice some portion of your own integrity.
The ones who can't, or won't, become hermits. Everyone else just compromises, to some degree.
It's difficult to balance it, to not give oneself over to the demands of the mob, while at the same time acknowledging your own self-deceptions.
